NCTA Junior City Championship Results - Elmdale Tennis Club

Elmdale hosted the NCTA Junior City Championship August 14-16. The participants played multiple matches per day through some tough heat. The winners were:

The General Burns Tennis Club in Nepean wrapped up its Club championship Sunday morning, Sept. 20th with the mens doubles won by Rob Lalonde and Tom Fitzgerald – runners up were Jiang Xiong and Fengjie Yuan. The Mixed doubles went to Tom Fitzgerald and Angela Palacio – runners up were Laura Fitzgerald and Miroslav Savic. Winner of the Ladies singles was Laura Wardlaw over Angela Palacio.

Carleton - Competitive Tennis Development Centre

As you may already know, junior competitive Tennis Development Center is starting at Carleton University at the end of September. Several physical fitness tryouts were held and we are happy to see a strong and motivated contingent of young players who will work with the junior development coaches throughout a 10-month annual training cycle.

Two of those players are featured below.

Noor Nabaa, age 11, is a fiercely competitive tennis girl who joined coach Michael's Regulation Ball competitive team late last winter and trained through the summer outdoors in the East End at Colonel By courts. She has a solid, steady two-handed backhand and enjoys playing from a baseline often finishing points with precision angles or lethal down the line backhands. She is working to develop more speed to her movement, improve her serve and gain confidence at the end to be able to play more all court game. Working with Noor has been a real fun as she is a friendly, smart and hard working player with a great sense of humor.

Filip Popadich, age (almost) 9, is an up-and-coming Ottawa tennis junior star. With almost fully developed bio-mechanics of a pro-serve that already distinguishes between the first and second serve, and with relaxed yet quick on court movement and all court game, Filip is a pleasure to watch in action, both in practice and in competitive matches. The boy has been traveling extensively the province over the past 10 months playing close to 15 individual U10 competitive events all over Ontario and learning how control emotions and how to focus at important moments. Coach Michael is very proud of the progress Filip made over the past 2 years. The player is enrolled in the Regulation ball program and trains with Noor and older players.

NTS - Evert Tennis Academy 3 day Clinic This Weekend at Tennis Centre West Ottawa

After last year's huge success the National Tennis School in partnership with the world renowned Evert Tennis Academy from Boca Raton Florida is hosting an incredible 3-Day clinic this fall at our Tennis Centre West Ottawa facility. NTS is flying down a team of coaches and a physical trainer from the Evert Tennis Academy Florida.

NTS is offering a chance for players (Junior and Adult) to participate in this first of its kind in Canada, Weekend long clinic. This Clinic will not only provide tennis training but will also delve into the physical and mental conditioning of the game.

Capital Kids Season

The Capital Kids Program has officially finished for the 2016 season. We wrapped up the year with a Celebration event at St. James Tennis Club on the afternoon of Sunday, September 20th with our Capital Kids coaches, Sean Fowler, Alex Harea, Nelson Dordelly-Rosales, Samantha Hum and program Director, John Wins-Purdy running fun games, a massive Red Ball tournament and giving out lots of prizes to over 100 participants. The kids came ready to play, mostly bringing their own racquets or borrowing some junior racquets from the club.

We are organizing a bus trip to Montreal on Friday August 14th. The bus will depart from TCWO at 8:30 am.
We got some feedback- thanks everyone who filled it out (see link here: Rogers Cup Information Request) - and the general consensus was to see the MENS QUARTERS DAY session; and why not? It's the best tennis we could see while still taking advantage of the group discount! (25%)

I am organizing the Roman Cup Pro-Am event at the Rideau Tennis Club on July 30th, and would like to take that opportunity to get the word out to the 600-700 members of the NCTA. Roman Kowalski was a talented, high-performance junior and a popular instructor at the Rideau Tennis Club at the time when he passed away suddenly and tragically. Having grown up as a junior at the Rideau, he went on to play tennis at Bollettieri's IMG Academies and eventually on the college circuit in the United States. Michael and Marlene Cowpland have been founders and generous contributors to the Roman Cup Fund each year, as well as supporters of the Pro-Am and the tournament.

It's an annual Pro-Am with all the top teaching pros in the Ottawa area, two hours of doubles, a silent auction, a BBQ, and live entertainment. All of it is about remembering Roman, and raising money for the junior development. All the funds raised that evening go the Roman Cup Fund and are disbursed between top finishers in the Roman Cup, as well as our best juniors in the Ottawa area.

New and exciting tennis programs happening this fall at the Carleton University Tennis Centre:

1) The Red Ball and Orange Ball Advanced Junior Competitive Program: Competitive training for 5-7 and 7-9 year olds on the Red and Orange Court on Tuesdays and Thursdays with Little Aces Minor League Tennis on weekends (3x per week). In addition to technical and tactical training, each player will go through a mandatory fitness program as well as have access to professional, psychological and nutrition resources as part of the tennis development centre. The program will run from the end of September until mid June with Tennis Canada certified coaches John Wins-Purdy and Michael Paduch. Tryouts for this program are mandatory and will be held on August 8/9. Ever dreamed of watching live professional tennis right here in the NCR?

Well, we have quite the option for you! The 2nd edition of the "Challenger National Bank de Gatineau" will be held very shortly, from July 25 through August 2nd at the Parc de l'Île in Gatineau. This professional and international womens' event is sanctioned by the International Tennis Federation and regroups some of the game's rising stars from all over the world, as well as Canada's most elite players. All of them are competing for the total prize money of $25,000. Last year, future WTA star Françoise Abanda from Montreal made it all the way to the singles final in front of passionate fans, where she battled a WTA top 175 ranked player from France.
Kids and adults are invited to join in on the fun and festivities all week! The site will be vibrant with energy, with a restaurant, terrace, music and special events happening all week long. Qualifying rounds are free for everyone and ticket prices range from $10 up to $20 per day depending on the round (with additional rebates for kids!). All proceeds will be invested in youth tennis promotion and program development.

The Kunstadt Open is an annual tennis tournament that takes place in Kanata, Ontario at the Glen Cairn Tennis Club and is hosted by Kunstadt Sports.

Elmridge Tennis Club - Roger Rookie July 18-19

The Kids' Tennis program at Elmridge Park Tennis Club is in full swing. Weekly camps continue through August 21. We're also looking forward to our upcoming Rogers Rookie Tour Tournaments July 18 and 19 and August 1 and 2.

The Manotick Tennis Club will host an OTA Junior Tournament the weekend of July 17th-19th. This will be a 3-star Provincial Circuit event and will include Future Stars U10 and boys and girls U12, 14 and 18. If you want to register, please open the link below and follow the instructions. Beacon Hill Tournament July 3-5

The courts at Beacon Hill in East Ottawa witnessed another well-attended junior tournament the weekend of July 3rd. We had a sanctioned OTA event in several age categories, but what we are really excited about is the entry level Rogers Rookie event we held earlier on Friday and finished off on Saturday afternoon. We saw a great level of competition from players who started playing tennis a year or less ago and who are now testing their skills in competition, often for the very first time. It was a real joy to see these young players trying their best. I took a few pictures, and I'm pleased to share them with the tennis community. Elmdale Open

The Elmdale Open runs June 13th-20th. Come watch the best players in Ottawa from our deck - with a new glass railing and the cheapest beer in town ($4.50 for a tall can), it's a great place to watch tennis. Seniors Tennis / Tennis For Life - by Jim Cameron

It is the biggest tournament of the year and at age 34 you are in your "prime" on the tennis court. You have to play that talented junior that you played many times in the past and always came out on top. But now that junior has returned from a full season of college tennis and things do not go well. You are dejected after the loss and wonder what happened. Am I two steps slower or is my "junior" opponent two steps faster?

Thoughts go through your head that this could be the end of your competitive career.

A buddy tries to cheer you up and suggests-hey,not so bad as next year you can also play "seniors" tennis. You are a little surprised. "Seniors"-I have decades to go before I am a senior.

The Barrhaven Tennis Club will be hosting the 7^th Annual Phil LeBlanc Memorial Tournament (PLMT) from July 16 to July 26. One of its key events is the PLMT BBQ. It will take place on July 18th from 5:00 - 8:00 PM (rain date July 25th) and promises to be as exciting as ever!

The event will include an exhibition singles match :competitors to be announced at a later date, and a performance by aspiring musician Nayana Bhatnagar, followed by a BBQ.

Rideau 3*** event February 20-22

We are well into spring and the U10 Future Stars Tour has seen 5 events so far this season. This tour, which combines boys and girls, is designed for players on a competitive pathway and features some of the best players from Ottawa, Montreal and Gatineau. The ranking system awards players based on a combination of participation and results, with the Top 10 at the end of the season receiving prizes for their efforts.

Capital Kids is off to a great start this season, running at 7 different public parks across the city and introducing tennis to over 500 kids so far. Our team of experienced coaches are welcoming new families and kids in the game, and helping them purchase new racquets and balls and learn basic skills that will enable them to enjoy success when they take to the courts.

Craig Henry's 1st OTA Rookie Tour Event

1st Craig Henry OTA Rookie Tour

The 1st OTA Rookie Tour Event for the Craig Henry tennis club was held on Sunday, May 31st. We had around 40-50 registrants from ages 6-13, many of the kids participating in their first "organized tennis event" ever. Special thanks to Capital Kids, the OTA and the volunteers who helped make this event happen.

2015 has been a big year for technology in tennis, with some of the most ground breaking ideas coming to the forefront as actual technology. From ultra light materials to computer chips, many tennis brands are revolutionizing the way we look to take our game to the next level. To, start let’s look at the computer chip that everyone is talking about this year with the Babolat PLAY series. Though this line has been out on the market for the last two seasons, it is only this year that Babolat has expanded the chip to its entire line up. Prior to this year PLAY was only offered on one model, the Babolat Pure Drive. Now, what is it that PLAY actually does to improve our game? PLAY uses sensors placed throughout the racket that transmit information to the handle, where it is stored and is able to be brought up on either a tablet, phone or laptop screen. This data will give you feedback on every area of your game, from the amount of topspin you generate to the consistency you hit the sweet spot on your racquet. All of this data is brought up in an array of colorful graphs and pie charts. Babolat PLAY is a must try for tech lover wanting to step up their game.

Head, the company that supplies the worlds #1 player Novak Djokovic, hasn’t taken quite the same route when it comes to pushing the boundaries of technology in tennis.

The U12 competitive interclub league party was held at the OAC on Saturday, April 11. The winning team was Tennis Centre West Ottawa this season, as shown. To see the results please visit https://ncta.ca/junior-tennis-competitive-interclub-league.

There were 24 kids total from OAC, TCWO, Sportheque, and Carleton who attended the event and many more who participated in the league. It's been a huge success with the players, coaches, and parents this year and we plan on improving it next year and potentially expanding it.

Instructors Course - May 2015 Ottawa

The Instructor's Course ran over 2 full weekends in May at the OAC and trained 28 participants to deliver engaging progressive tennis lessons to kids. These candidates were all evaluated on their demonstration, organization and playing ability and hope to become certified as level 1 instructors. The Instructors Course was delivered by Arthur Cuenco and John Wins-Purdy.

The TPA also ran a summer camps workshop at the OAC which was attended by 41 coaches and Instructors from across the region. Andy Sutton, Head Course Facilitator for the OTA was very energetic and passionate as he helped everyone brush up on their abilities to run fun sessions to a variety of different skill levels and groups sizes.

Elmridge Park Tennis Club News

With our May 12 season opener and AGM, we're thrilled to be welcoming back long time members as well as new members, but we're also pleased to announce several events which are open to the broader tennis community:

May 30th: We will host our 3^rd Annual Kids' Tennis Fair. We'll supply the kid-size nets, racquets and balls, the NCTA/OTA Smash Cage and a kid friendly environment. The kids will supply the fun!

June 16: Word of our summer barbecues has been spreading over the last several years. Anyone who has attended one of these feasts knows that we're not talking about your standard hamburger and sausage fare. This year theme is "Jamaican Me Hungry." Chef Paul Kirijian promises Caribbean jerk chicken, red bean rice, mango chutney, lime coleslaw and a Millefeuilles pineapple desert. This event is open to the general public but we fully expect it to sell out so be sure to check the Elmridge website for information on tickets.

Rogers Rookie Tour: Elmridge will be hosting 2 Rogers Rookie Tour Tournaments for U8 and U12 on the weekends of July 18 & 19 and August 1 & 2.

Capital Kids Registration

Capital Kids began registration on March 21st and has received over 750 registrations in the past 6 weeks. Tanglewood Park and Judge Park have received over 160 registrations each and the spots for session one and two are almost full at these two locations. In order to boost the registration at Rivierain Park and Sheffield Glen Park, the Capital Kids tennis team has placed advertisements on Facebook and Kijiji, and sent flyers out to the neighbourhoods near these two locations through Canada Post. We've seen the registration go up in the last few days and we are expecting to receive more applications for all of our seven locations every day. The 750 registrations we've received are just for the May and June sessions. We will open the registration for July and August on May 15th. We look forward to introducing the sport of tennis to many Ottawa kids this year and we are half way to achieving our goal - 1200 registrations in total to join the Capital Kids in 2015! Message from the President, NCTA

The National Capital Tennis Association (NCTA) has stepped up its level of activity supporting tennis in our community over the past 12-18 months; so much that we now need a newsletter to keep people informed of all that's happening! We hope that this newsletter will allow tennis enthusiasts to learn about the vibrant tennis scene in the NCR (National Capital Region)- across the 31 tennis clubs / tennis organization as well as with our partners in the City of Ottawa and the Ontario Tennis Association.

There is more investment taking place in tennis in the NCR now than has ever been the case in the past. Over $100k per year in funding has been obtained through grants from Tennis Canada and the Ontario Trillium Foundation to provide programs for kids (Capital Kids and Little Aces); we have new programs across the city and are delivering tennis sessions in dozens of our local schools. We have more competitive activity taking place than ever before, both at the junior and adult level. Pretty much every weekend throughout the summer you will be able to find at least one OTA sanctioned tournament taking place at one of our clubs, which will give any aspiring Milos or Eugenie many opportunities to compete, hone their skills, and obtain ranking points. We're even exploring how we can bring the pro tennis circuit to Ottawa at some time in the near future.

I hope that you enjoy reading this newsletter and I also hope that many of you will be future contributors, sharing your thoughts and suggestions about how we can do even more to enrich the tennis experience for enthusiasts in our region. Junior News

There were over 90 entrees in both the 3*** Regional Competitive Tournament at the Rideau Tennis Club and the Easter Tournament at the OAC. Many players from Ottawa, Quebec and even a few from Toronto participated; as you can see, there is increasing collaboration from across the region. It's been a very good start to the season!

Congratulations to Colin McAlpine - Winner of the Men's 2015 Eastern Canadian Senior Indoor National Championship

The NCTA would like to congratulate our very own Colin McAlpin who, in March, won the 2015 Men’s Eastern Canadian Senior Indoor National Championships - Men Over 55 Singles - in Toronto. He defeated Abbas Kiltash 6-3, 6-4 and managed not to lose a single set the entire tournament. He almost doubled his achievement, but fell just short in the Men's Doubles finals with Kevin Green, losing a tight match 6-1, 0-6, 10-7.

Colin is very well known locally and nationally; he has won the Ottawa City Championships a record 14 times (9 singles and 5 doubles), and National Championships nine times (5 singles and 4 doubles) and will compete regularly in local and national Open and Masters category tournaments this season.
He is a great student of the game and is currently working with Toronto-based coaching legend John McManus, who was the Canadian Davis Cup coach 1985-88 and has coached 8 players in the top 100 throughout his career.

The Little Aces Leagues at the Tennis Centre West Ottawa and Carleton Tennis Centre have been a great success in their first season. Over 150 kids participated across both leagues and enjoyed the team tennis competition format, learning new skills, and having fun with their friends. This low cost option for recreational and pre-competitive kids has proved a great program for kids wanting to keep up their tennis in the off-season and is gaining popularity in the city. Capital Kids

Capital Kids is back with seven locations this year! This OTA program, funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, provides free tennis lessons from May to June all across Ottawa. Racquets, nets and balls are provided for all our participants and subsidies make purchasing racquets very affordable. We are happy to provide teaching opportunities to seven head coaches and as many instructors, along with many youth and parent volunteers who give their time to help the kids improve their skills and focus on the game! We are currently visiting schools across the city to promote our member clubs and Capital Kids, and if you would like more information about the program, please visit our website at www.capitalkidstennis.com. Smash Cage

The NCTA Smash Cage is the perfect addition to any social event. When inflated, it reaches 15 feet high and 20 feet deep, and it is equipped with a radar gun that can test the speed of your serve or any other shot you might like to try out! The Smash Cage is great for fun competitions like fastest serve, most accurate serve, or guess your speed! To book the Smash Cage, please email info@ncta.ca.

Volunteering at BNP Paribas. By Brian Briggs - A Craig Henry Tennis Club Member and NCTA board member

I spent a week in Indian Wells for the BNP Paribas Open, it was my first trip to the desert, I’ve been to the US. Open, Montreal and I’ve volunteered at the Rogers Cup in Toronto as a driver for the last 5 years. So I thought why not volunteer here, meet some people, get behind the scenes, save some money, and watch some tennis. We don’t get paid accommodations which I know everyone asks me, I mean, it’s not like I’m going to Africa to fight world hunger, I’m at a world class tennis tournament, driving around some of the best players in the world, including family, officials, sponsors and more.

In the winter of 2014, the Manotick Tennis Club (MTC) implemented an online system to automate membership and program registration, and to replace the chalkboard used to book their six courts. By the registration weekend in April 2014, the system was all ready to go. It was used throughout the 2014 season and got rave reviews by the membership. In fact, at the MTC Annual General Meeting in October 2014, members who attended made a point of saying how much they loved the system, and how it had really made their experience more enjoyable given the ease to book courts, sign up for ladders, sign up for tournaments, etc.

Elmridge Park Tennis Club

After suffering through a seemingly interminable winter we're eager to meet old friends and make some new ones across the net at Elmridge Park Tennis Club. We're particularly excited about our Kids' Tennis program for the coming season. With Capital Kids at nearby Beacon Hill, our Kids' Tennis Fair on May 30, summer camps and two Rogers Rookie Tour events there's a lot to be excited about.

John Hartin: President/board member: 1960s-70s.
Bob Lister: Member, board member: 1959-1970, Club Champ multiple times.
